Angela Cadogan

Angela is a NZ registered Physiotherapy Specialist (Musculoskeletal). Angela has a Ph.D in Musculoskeletal Diagnostics from AUT University, Auckland, New Zealand (2012) with a sub-specialty in the diagnosis and management of shoulder pain. She is based in Christchurch, New Zealand where she works part-time in her own physiotherapy practice, in a diagnostic Orthopaedic Triage role (Shoulder) with the Canterbury District Health Board and in private practice with an orthopaedic shoulder specialist. She has an ongoing research interest in shoulder diagnostics and clinical management of shoulder conditions.

Background

Angela graduated from AUT University in 1990 with a Diploma in Physiotherapy. Her work history includes Greenlane/National Women's Hospital (Auckland, NZ), rehabilitation medicine and occupational health in Chicago Illinois, private practice and touring with several sports teams while completing her Diploma in Manipulative Therapy (NZMPA) in NZ in 1998. In 2000 she completed her Masters Degree in Sports Physiotherapy at Curtin University (Perth, Australia) then returned to New Zealand to take on a position with NZ Cricket as the team physiotherapist for the White Ferns in 2001. This role expanded and she worked as the Sports Medicine and Science Coordinator for women's cricket, and the touring physiotherapist for the NZ Men's "A" team for several years, and for the World XI Cricket team in 2007. She left NZ Cricket in 2009 to begin her PhD research into the diagnosis of shoulder pain. She was awarded a Clinical Research Training Fellowship through the Health Research Council of NZ and completed her PhD in 2012. She has published several papers from her thesis in the area of shoulder diagnostics and sports physiotherapy.

Professional Involvement

Angela is the immediate past President of Sports Physiotherapy New Zealand (SPNZ) and Chair of the SPNZ Education Committee, still currently serving on the SPNZ Education Committee. Angela was a board member of the NZ College of Physiotherapy until its' restructure in 2014. She is lead tutor for the Shoulder module of the NZ Manipulative Physiotherapists Association courses and is a member of the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists (ASSET). Angela is an independent reviewer for the Health and Disability Commissioner and was an invited member of the ACC Advisory Panel in the development of national imaging guidelines for shoulder pain in 2012. She is currently on the NZ Physiotherapy Board Working Party for Physiotherapy Specialisation and provides consultation and advisory on Board related matters.
